In June, Ripon area artists will be opening up their studios for the North Yorkshire Open Studios event.

This year’s event is brimming with creative talent – with basket makers and blacksmiths, potters and painters, photographers and printmakers, stained glass makers and jewellery makers, all opening up their studios with free admission to showcase their talents, sell their artwork and share their passion.

“North Yorkshire Open Studios offers so much more than a trip to a gallery,” said event director Rick Faulkner, ‘It’s a chance to talk to the artists, find out what makes them tick and learn about the techniques they use in their work”.

With studios open in and around Markington, Pateley Bridge, Mickley and High Burton, near Masham, there’s plenty to see in the Ripon area.

Ruth Wilkinson’s mosaics, Anna Poulton’s expressive drawings and Stuart Whitehead’s textural combinations of printing, painting and drawing can all be seen in and around the village of Mickley

In Markington, printmaker Pam Grimmond will show visitors how her printing press works and talk about the process of making her lino-prints inspired by the natural world.

Elsewhere in the village ceramicist Helen Graham will demonstrate techniques such as applying inlay and transfers.

At the ArtisOn studios on the outskirts of Masham, there’s a chance to see three artists:

· Ian Scott Massie is currently working on paintings and screenprints for an exhibition Places of Pilgrimage at Southwell Minster.

· Josie Beszant, who creates intriguing artefacts reminiscent of reliquaries or fairy tale caskets.

· Charlotte Morrison’s love of collecting vintage items is reflected in her quirky and decorative ceramics.

Pateley Bridge also has a cluster of artists’ studios to view, with painters Maureen Little and Sarah Garforth, felt artist Annette Jeffery and jewellers Moxon and Simm in the town, and jeweller Alice Clarke at Fellbeck.

Studios are open across two weekends, Saturday and Sunday,June 6-7, and Saturday and Sunday, June 13-14. from 10.30am-5.30pm.
