A Ripon schoolgirl is one of the winners in a competition held to design new library cards to be issued across North Yorkshire.

Martha Lucia Capaldi, who attends Greystone Community Primary School, is just one of 12 winners out of hundreds of entrants who took part in the competition run by North Yorkshire County Council, which operates the library service.

The Year 5 pupil is pictured with her artwork, which features a mouse and a bird, at Ripon library where she was presented with her card showing the winning design.

Martha’s class teacher, Mrs Lumsdon, said: “Martha is hugely creative and always works hard to ensure that what she does is to the best of her ability.

“I’m really proud of her. Well done Martha!”

A spokesman for the council added: “The cards will be offered to new members joining North Yorkshire Libraries, while existing library members can replace their old card for a new one for a small charge.

“The new set of 12 designs was chosen from hundreds of entries, many from children, and featured a range of images including animals and photographic scenes from around North Yorkshire.”

The new cards also feature a QR code to allow more information about library services to be accessed by scanning with a smartphone.
