Christmas spectaculars lined-up for towns

Masham and Bedale are set to welcome in the festive season with winter festivals and lights displays.

In Masham, Christmas decorations are due to go up after fears that a lack of interest from the public would see the lights cancelled this year.

The parish council decided to donate funds from the town’s Yorkshire Day market to the Christmas lights fund and are hoping local contractors can be found to hang the decorations around the town centre.

Meanwhile, ice-skating, Christmas carols and a ‘Barbecue Bash’ are set to welcome the festive season in Bedale.

The town’s Winter Festival will see Bedale Hall filled with stalls selling food and drinks and Christmas gifts, while family activities include story-time trails around Bedale Park, a Santa’s grotto, face-painting, Christmas story-telling in the library, and a skating rink outside Bedale Hall.

The event has been organised by Bedale Chamber of Trade and Tourism and will take place on Saturday, December 3, from 10am-5pm, followed by the Christmas light switch on at 5.30pm.

There will also be food stalls selling traditional snacks including hot roasted chesnuts and festive burgers, an organ recital in St Gregory’s Church, and a Christmas window competition between the town’s traders.

In the evening the Festive Barbecue Bash will take place in Bedale Hall with a bar and disco, rodeo bull and ice skating. Tickets for the bash are available, for over-16s only, from Bedale Beauty on 01677 427557 and are priced £20.

Advance tickets for the skating rink are available in advance price from Patchwork Rose on 01677 427627 and cost £5 for half-an-hour, or £7 when bought on the day.
