A new competition for children held in association with the Harrogate Advertiser Series will give young poets the chance to meet Carol Ann Duffy.
The Poet Laureate will be the star of a family-friendly launch event for NiddFest literary festival, a new festival celebrating nature in writing for adults and children.
In the run-up to Duffy’s appearance at Pateley Bridge Memorial Hall on Saturday, July 19, organisers have linked up with our paper in a district-wide free poetry competition for children.
NiddFest Literary Festival is looking for poems written by primary school age children in the HG postcode area.
The winning entries will be published in this newspaper and prizes will be awarded by Carol Ann Duffy in a special ceremony after her performance of her classic fairy tale, The Princess’ Blankets.
The Advertiser Series’ arts editor Graham Chalmers will be among the judges.
NiddFest organiser, Kit Peel, a children’s author himself, said “We are very excited about the opportunity for primary school children in our area to enter this competition and meet Carol Ann Duffy, the Poet Laureate.”
Set in unique venues and outdoor locations in Upper Nidderdale, the first full Niddfest is to take place July 24-26, 2015 .
It will offer a weekend of talks by some of the UK’s leading nature writers in fiction and non-fiction linked to fun outdoors events in the Dale.
This year’s launch event will serve as a taster.
Poems for the Carol Ann Duffy competition must be submitted to the NiddFest website, www.niddfest.com/competition by a closing date of July 12.
The poems can be of any length, but they must have a nature theme.
The NiddFest committee is also looking for volunteers to help organise NiddFest 2015.
