WETHERBY’s Ryan Tucker enjoyed victory at the KUGB’s 46th National Championships at the NIA in Birmingham last weekend.
The competition is the largest of its type in the country.
Tucker, seeded after last year’s performance, reached the finals, overcoming a particularly awkward fighter in the quarter final.
In the semi, Ryan came up against the current Shotokan Cup Champion. Having already lost to this opponent in this year’s first Grand Slam, it looked like a tough draw. However, Ryan scored with a well timed ippon (knock out) to go through.
The final was a close affair but Ryan’s experience secured his victory.
He becomes the club’s first Men’s Senior National Champion since Sensei Williams back in 1995.
Ryan trains at Leeds Shotokan karate club run by sensei Richard Backhouse.
