Harrogate Ripley Star Table Tennis Club’s Linda Simpson topped off a magnificent season by leading England’s over 60 women’s team to gold in a recent competition.
Simpson and partner Sandra Rider from Leeds were competing at the fourth International Team event held at Tipton Sports Academy, near Wolverhampton.
Linda was the only unbeaten lady in what proved to be a very tense competition, which required England to beat a strong German side in the last match.
Linda led from the front, winning both her singles to secure gold for England after a convincing 4-1 victory over Germany.
The pair previously defeated England B 4 -1 and Holland 5-0 to set up the final against Germany.
After the win against Germany Linda said: “It was a tremendous team effort.
“To beat a strong German side to win the gold medal has really been a fantastic end to a long tough season.”
It was a marvellous way to finish a tough season for Linda, who is the number one veteran lady table tennis player in the country.
Following winning the National over 60s doubles title, the Ripley Star ACEsecured a doubles bronze medal with her partner Margaret Welsman from Northampton in the VETTS European championships held in Bremen, Germany in May.
The Championships attracted over 3,500 competitors. In the ladies over 60s singles, Linda came second in her qualifying group which included the world champion from Germany. She reached the last 16 but was beaten by a Russian seed and eventual silver medallist) only losing 8 in the fifth end. Linda and Margaret Wellsman qualified from the group doubles stage and then went on to win bronze medal having knocked out the No 1 seeds, again the world champion and her partner, in the quarter finals.
