Yorkshire came very close to providing the Epsom Derby winner when the Middleham trained Libertarian came second in the big race last Saturday.
Elaine Burke entered the annals of turf history by becoming the first ever woman trainer to saddle a placed horse in this prestigious race.
Libertarian, tipped in this column last week, ran a great race despite the muddling pace and, as predicted, was finishing fastest of all at the line. I hope you nabbed the 20/1 price for the St Leger (now 4/1) as I think he has a great chance in the final Classic at Doncaster in September.
Pontefract stage their very own version of Britain’s Got Talent during their evening meeting on Friday from 6:35pm with ten local stars hoping to win a recording contract.
The racing action is also top class and I hope that Devon trainer Stuart Kittow sends Our Folly on the long journey north to contest the stayers handicap. Kittow has his yard in top form and Our Folly has shown an abundance of stamina in winning his last two races.
Mayaasem won at Pontefract in April and he could run in the night’s feature race, The Mr Wolf Sprint handicap. He is also entered at Haydock on Saturday and is worth a bet at whichever Yorkshire course that Lambourn trainer Charlie Hills aims his progressive sprinter.
I will be at Beverley on Saturday when a seven-race programme starts at 2pm. The feature race is the Brian Yeardley Two-year-old Trophy. Malton based Richard Fahey earmarked this race for Supplicant following his win on the course in May and this experience makes him the one to be on. Another horse that won on that same day in May is Mey Blossom trained at Scarcroft by Richard Whitaker. This mare has been a great servant to the yard having won nine races, three at Beverley. Running plans for the weekend have yet to be finalised and she is entered in the sprint at Beverley and twice on Friday night at Pontefract. Richard is making regular use of star apprentice, George Chaloner, and his presence in the saddle would further enhance Mey Blossom’s chances at either venue.
There is also racing in Yorkshire at Catterick on Saturday. Starting at 2:25 There is a variety of attractions for young racegoers including face painting, glitter tattoos and an indoor play area.
