Boston Spa can boast its very own British ice dance champion in the form of 10-year-old Hana Wrigglesworth.

The St Mary’s C of E Primary School pupil stormed to victory in the British Ice Dance Championships in Sheffield on Monday, crowned Juvenile champion in the competition for under 13s.

The title marks the culmination of months of dedication from the youngster, who was unable to train or compete between October and January due to illness.

But after she returned to the sport at the start of the year, Hana was determined to get back to winning ways according to her mum Gaynor Wrigglesworth.

The Ice Sheffield club member qualified for the British Championships after impressing at events in both Bracknell and Bradford.

“Hana’s come an awful long way,” said Gaynor.

“It takes a lot of dedication. She trains three or four times a week in Sheffield with her coach Vivian Dean, and it’s a 100-mile round trip every time.

“But she takes it all her stride.

“She was very nervous on Monday but afterwards was quite relaxed. We’re all over the moon for her.”

Hana is now moving on from solo dance to former a partnership with British boys champion Dominic Barter.

And the pair are already on the road to success, having finished second in a competition in Oxford after just five lessons together.

“The coaches are targeting international competition for them,” said Gaynor.

“Our only concern now is funding and being able to manage the cost of travelling abroad, so we are looking for people to sponsor Hana.”
