Wetherby Athletic Ladies found it increasingly difficult to find the goals this week, as they took on Wortley FC Ladies in the County Cup.

Wetherby went behind after a mistake at the back and despite many chances, it was still 1-0 at half time.

Grace Adams scored to equalise five minutes into the second half, but a slip from the Wetherby goalkeeper Beryl Hockey gave Wortley the chance that they needed to retake the lead.

At 2-1, Wortley nearly took further advantage but saw a shot saved onto the post by Hockey and cleared off the line by Jemma Carmody.

Wetherby then started to play, and were gifted a leveller after 60 minutes when a shot was deflected off a Wortley defender past the keeper to make it 2-2.

The game then opened up and Wetherby were able to create more attacks, rewarded by goals from Grace Adams and Emma Guilder.

Wetherby now meet Lepton Highlanders in the next round of the County Cup.

Player of the match was Jemma Carmody.

Meantime, Wetherby Athletic Ladies Reserves battled for a point in a 1-1 draw against West Riding Division Three league leaders Norristhorpe.

Norristhorpe took the game to Wetherby, with most of the possession going their way in the first 10 minutes.

Wetherby started to get back into it with some direct football, Rachel Carmichael hitting the crossbar from tight angle.

After some neat footwork, Carmichael was brought down in the box and the referee awarded a penalty.

But an unfortunate slip resulted in the ball hit straight at the keeper.

It was back and forth for the first half, with some great runs from Martina Petrova and Abbie O’Toole.

But Norristhorpe upped the pressure in the second half and an unfortunate error by the Wetherby defence led to them taking the lead.

Wetherby gathered themselves and started to get back into the game and were finally rewarded.

With 10 minutes remaining, Carmichael slotted away the equaliser.

Wetherby’s player of the match was debutant Martina Petrova, who kept Norristhorpe’s defence on the back foot.
