Good Friday racing tips: Rivellino in Garlick’s Goodies

Racing took place on Good Friday for the first time last year and with the All-Weather championships taking place at Lingfield this Friday it looks like it is now a permanent addition to the racing calendar.

Local trainers will be targeting some of the good prize money on offer at Lingfield with David Nicholls aiming his Sovereign Debt at the Mile Championship. This horse had injury problems when trained by Michael Bell in Newmarket but ‘Dandy’ has worked his magic and he won well at Wolverhampton in a Listed race.

Middleham trainer Karl Burke sent out Rivellino to win the sprint qualifier over course and distance in February and he could be worth a bet in the final.

Danny Tudhope has been booked to ride and he should be a decent price.

Rebecca Bastiman is hoping to run Borderlescott in the race named in his honour at Musselburgh on Friday. He was just pipped by a short-head in this race last year and if he is to win a race as a 13-year-old then this will be it.

I will be cheering him on but will only have a token bet on him for old times sake.

A better bet on the card could be the John Quinn trained Moonlightnavigator who boasts a course win.

I can also pass on a tip for Alan Swinbank’s Aramist in the Balmoral Cup.

While there is no racing in Yorkshire over the Easter weekend there is the Middleham Open Day on Good Friday. 6,000 people turned up last year to visit all the top yards including those of top trainer Mark Johnston.

Tickets cost £10 per adult which includes a souvenir programme and entry into a prize draw. Admission for accompanied children is free.

Racing continues next week with Pontefract on Tuesday and Catterick on Wednesday staging their opening meetings of the Flat season. Both courses are taking advantage of the school holidays and have a family theme to proceedings.
