Our latest walking route is in the Beckwithshaw area. With thanks to the Harrogate Ramblers for the details.

In spite of some road-walking, this route around Harlow Hill and Beckwithshaw is very fine, with glorious woodland, field paths and distant views from the Pennines to the Hambleton Hills and the Vale of York.

The walk starts at the Harlow Inn on the B6162 Otley Road at Harlow Hill. Cross the road and turn left then right along Nursery Lane. On a clear day there is a magnificent view over Harrogate, Knaresborough and the Vale of York.

Pass between the Observatory (1829) and the Water Tower and when the asphalt road bends right downhill, keep straight ahead round a gate along the track and out to an open green.

Cross over the grass to a Pinewoods information panel and turn left. The path leads through the Pinewoods with more fine views.

At Crag Lane, Harlow Carr Gardens are to the left, but turn right then left down the road signposted to the Harrogate Arms Hotel. Bear left to cross the beck and right along the path on the other side.

Just after a wooden footbridge the path forks: keep straight ahead and join the Harrogate Ringway footpath. At another fork, keep right of the fence and, where the Ringway climbs some steps, continue with a fence on the left (signposted to Pot Bank). Follow this fence to Pot Bank. Fork left to the road.

Turn left uphill to Beckwithshaw with views to the right over Haverah Park. Pass the cricket field. After the church, go through the gap-stile on the left, then through two gates into a field. Continue towards a house.

Cross the stile in the wall and go diagonally left and through the gap-stile in the wall opposite into the garden, where the path bears round to the right to a stile.

Walk down the field, following the fence on the right, which bends left, to reach a stile where wall and fence meet. Cross and continue beside the hedge, over the next stile and follow the left hand edge of the field past farm buildings to a stile in the wall.

Bear left across the field to a stile. Turn right towards a bungalow. Near the bottom of the field bear left to a bridle gate, cross the drive and through another gate into a field. Follow the right hand edge and join the Howe House Farm access road.

Turn left and left again to the junction. Turn right and continue to the crossroads at Beckwith Head. Cross the Harrogate Ringway.

Keep straight on at the crossroads, but on a right hand bend, just before Lund House, turn left and follow the path to a farm track. Turn left, and when the gravel track ends, continue along the fence, going through the kissing-gate and onwards. Cross a stile, with the hedge to the left.

At the end of the field go through the gate and over the stile to Whinney Lane. Turn left and on to the roundabout. Cross over Beckwith Road and back to Harlow Hill.
