Thousands lined the streets of the town to welcome the world’s largest annual sporting event, and they were not disappointed as a break-away group of seven raced past, followed by the full peloton.

John Farmer, 68, travelled from Devon to see the race in Yorkshire and was delighted to catch a glimpse in Knaresborough.

He said: “It is all over in a few seconds, but the atmosphere it is amazing.

“I can say I was there, I was there and it was great.”
