Veteran councillor quits Conservatives

A VETERAN councillor on the county and borough council has quit the Conservative party after expressing "deep misgivings" about the Government cutbacks.

The former chairman of North Yorkshire County Council, Coun John Savage, has announced this week he is leaving the NYCC Conservative Group.

"I have deep misgivings about the financial cuts nationally and their follow-through in theCounty which will discriminate against the hardworking, lower-paid members of society," he said.

Coun Savage will remain as the NYCC councillor for Ainsty Division, which he has represented for 13 years, and as councillor for Marston Moor ward for Harrogate BoroughCouncil.
