THe A66 at Middleton Tyas was closed in both directions after a lorry shed a load of hazardous materials on the road.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the incident at East Layton turn off on the A66 near Richmond.

A white Mercedes lorry fell onto its side and barrels carrying hazardous materials fell into a field at the side of the road, just before 4pm on Thursday, April 26.

The driver of the lorry was uninjured, but firefighters in chemical protection suits had to check the scene for signs of chemical leaks or spills.

They found “a small amount” of chemicals, but no risk to either the environment or the public, a fire service spokesman said.

Anyone who witnesses the incident was urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101.
