Marcel Kittel has won Stage One of the 2014 Tour de France in front of the biggest crowd ever assembled in Harrogate town centre.

Team Giant-Shimano rider Kittel sprinted to the triumph in front of members of the Royal Family as Mark Cavendish crashed during the sprint finish on West Park.

Cavendish was immediately taken to hospital to have an x-ray on his shoulder, and it is understood his 2014 Tour could be in doubt.

An emotional-looking Cavendish was holding his arm but immediately got up following his fall to cross the finish line.

His team mate Mark Renshaw said of Cavendish’s fall: “He is not in great shape but I am sure it will be OK.

“He is a tough guy and it is not the first crash he has ever had.”

Kittel was awarded the yellow jersey by the watching Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince Harry.

Kittel said: “It was so so hard that final hill.

“But the fans were cheering, and my team did an amazing job, they rode so strongly today.

“I had good legs today. I can’t believe it - it’s unreal.”

Stage One classifications:

1 Kittel, 2 Sagan, 3 Navardauskas, 4 Coquard, 5 Rogers, 6 Froome, 7 Kristoff, 8 Vanmarke
