The Bury family, from Swainby near Northallerton, had been celebrating a birthday party at their luxury villa on Sunday when their gardener allegedly opened fire with a pump-action shotgun.

The 46-year-old, identified only by his initials, V.A, had argued with mum Catherine Bury, 56, on Friday, media reports have said.

He had been held overnight by police after the family, including Catherine, her mum Cecille, 87 and son Alex, 24, received death threats and reported the gardener to the Turkish police in Dalyan on the south coast of the country.

But following his release he returned to the villa - where the family were decorating for a poolside party to celebrate Catherine’s birthday - and opened fire.

Grandma Cecille was shot in the back, and Alex was shot in the leg. Catherine, who raced up three flights of stairs to the top floor of the holiday home and bolted herself in the bathroom, was shot four times as she lay on the tiled floor after the crazed gunman blasted the door open. She died at the scene.

Neighbours, who knew Ms Bury as Anne, said the family were “lovely people who never got in trouble”.

It is understood the gardener later gave himself up to police and is due to appear in court later today.
