Christmas Lights: The Christmas lights of Thirsk will be switched on at 6pm on Sunday by the winners of the children's festive painting competition, from local primary schools, which will be judged by Sue Lake of White Rose Books today. Corner Cupboard: A charity Christmas shopping evening was a great success at the Corner Cupboard, Birdforth, Thirsk, when Sue Calvert and Jane Burgess teamed up with owners Peter and Gerd Handley to raise funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Guests enjoyed delicious nibbles and drinks whilst perusing the many attractive Christmas gift ideas at the Corner Cupboard. They raised 1,300 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and were thrilled that the evening had been a complete sellout.

South Kilvington School: Friends of South Kilvington School hold their Autumn Bazaar tomorrow from 10.30am to 1.30pm at South Kilvington School, Thirsk. There will be face painting, children's and adul's tombola, home made cakes stall, fun activities for children, raffle, and refreshments. Everyone is welcome to come along.

Open Week: Rural Arts host an open week at The Old Courthouse, Thirsk from today to Friday, November 25. Today there is a creative activity making Christmas tree decorations and the tree, which will put on display. Tomorrow 102 Dalmations will be shown for all the family from 2pm, entry free, and on Sunday learn how to create stunning cards, at 10.30am and 1.30pm. Highside Church Services: On Sunday there is a service at Leake Church at 9am, Godly Play at Cowesby at 10am taken by the Rev Liz Hoare and Holy communion during the service at Felixkirk Church at 11am. There is also Evensong and baptism at Nether Silton at 4pm. Next Sunday is Advent Sunday, at Boltby Church when the Bishop of Whitby, the Right Rev Robert Lads will take the service of Holy Communion at 10.30am.

Art at Thirlby: An art exhibition takes palce at Thirlby Village Hall on Sunday, November 20 by Thirlby Art Group from 10am to 5pm. Admission is free, coffee and biscuits will be served.

Flood Committee: Head curator of Harlow Carr, Matthew Willson, is supporting the plight of the people who have lost their gardens in Sutton and Thirlby during the floods in June. The Hillside Temporary Flood Committee are grateful for his support, and excited to hear that he has secured a team of servicemen, along with some volunteers from Harlow Carr to work in helping restore the gardens on Sunday, November 27.

Children’s Workshop at Sowerby: A children’s Christmas workshop for 5-11 year olds, organised by Sowerby Methodist and St Oswald’s Church, will be held on Saturday, December 3, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm at Sowerby Parochial Hall.
