An actress who studied at York College is returning to the region with classic theatre – with a twist.
Louise Best, who did her A levels at the college, after studying at the then Allertonshire School in Northallerton and Northallerton College, is staging Shakespeare’s Yorkshire: Return to the Abbey on July 30 and 31 at Jervaulx Abbey, near Ripon.
Her show, which features five actors, will take the audience on a theatrical tour of the abbey and will include sonnets and snippets from some of Shakespeare’s best-known plays.
“It will be a celebration of Yorkshire Britishness,” said Miss Best, a graduate of the Guildford School of Acting in Surrey. “There will be lots of fun and light-hearted scenes, and plenty of silliness.
“A Yorkshire farmer will play a big role. There will also be sheep and a Border Collie puppet. We’ll find actors in the most unusual of places.”
Miss Best’s professional theatre company The Think: Light Platform has secured sponsorship for the show from Arts Council England and North Yorkshire-based Gorgeous Cottages.
Miss Best, 26, fell in love with the 1156 Cistercian abbey and its 125 acres of parkland when she had days out as a girl growing up in Morton-on-Swale, near Northallerton
The interactive shows take place at 1.30pm, 4pm and 6.30pm and they start at the abbey’s tea rooms. Tickets available from the box office on 0333 666 3366.
