At Monday's meeting, Ron Jennison reported that Pat Heddon had returned to the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton for observation.
Ron Dean, in the chair, thanked the stewards, introduced a new member, Bob Richardson, and gave a warm welcome to a Probus visitor, Peter Winskill from York.
He then introduced the speaker - Mike Darwin, of Darwin’s Salerooms - to the 43 members. Mike is the third generation of auctioneers operating in this district since his grandfather started the business in 1952.
Locally educated at Northallerton before going on to further education, Mike joined Darwin’s in 1980, upon the untimely death of his Uncle John.
He enjoys auctioneering, despite many drawbacks in what they are able to sell these days, with all the new rules and regulations.
He gave many humorous anecdotes of house clearances and historic sales which Darwin’s have performed across this area, answering many questions.
Gordon Bainbridge gave the vote of thanks, which were warmly applauded. The Chairman wished “a very Happy Christmas” to all the members who are not able to come to the Christmas Buffet on December 12 (to which wives and widows of former members have been invited).
The next meeting is on January 9, when the speaker will be Alan Davis of the Yorkshire Ambulance Service and stewards are Ken Pipe, Fred Metcalfe and Geoff Kenyon.
