A Ripon Grammar School student is planning the trip of a lifetime after being selected for a 12 month teaching placement in Thailand.

Katy Marsden, was chosen by the Project Trust charity to head to Southeast Asia in August 2015 after finishing her A levels.

The 17-year-old already volunteers at Moorside Infant School and applied for the voluntary work scheme after a presentation in her school.

She said: “I never considered a gap year until the presentation. I talked to my parents about it then went to Scotland to do my assessment.

“Before they offer you role they have to get to know you a little better because the scheme isn’t for everyone. You have to be ready to do something as big as they’re offering.

“The scheme appealed to me because I do quite a lot of work with children at Moorside and I would enjoy working with children when I’m older.

““The placement will allow me to develop as a person and to experience what Thai culture is all about.

“I’m looking forward to living in a country with a strong emphasis in Buddhism as I’ve been studying the religion for the last four years at school.”

As part of her trip, Project Trust requires Katy to raise £5900 in fundraising and the student is already busy planning events.

She said: “I have started making my leaflets and writing to sponsors and currently thinking about doing a sponsored sky dive.

“Project Trust threw us a Ceilidh in Scotland and that was great so I might organise one of those in my school hall.”
