Relocation shock for firm's staff

ONE of Knaresborough’s most famous companies is leaving its town centre premises next year.

Directors at J Pickles Healthcare on Knaresborough High Street announced to shocked staff on Tuesday this week that the firm, which has been in the area for almost 40 years, would be relocating to Skipton next March.

A statement from J Pickles read as follows: “Due to a number of business considerations, J Pickles Healthcare is proposing to relocate to new premises in Skipton with effect from March 2006.

“The company is at present undergoing a full consultation process with all of its employees. Business will continue as normal during this time.

“The company regrets having to make this proposal as it has been in the area for over 40 years and has enjoyed the loyal support of all its staff.”

The company would not make any further comment.

The famed pharmaceutical and toiletries manufacturing and distribution company was brought to Knaresborough in 1967 by Stanley Horner.

First started in the early 1800s by orginator, John Pickles, the company’s growth has seen three production sites and the purchasing in 1978 of the company’s headquarters at the 250-year-old Georgian building, Beech House on the High Street.

Well-known Pickles products include Snowfire for chapped hands and Fiery Jack. A broad range of lotions, creams, ointments, waxes and liquids are produced from the town centre site factories and the quote ‘If It’s Pickles It’s Good’ has become famous across the country.

The firm employs around 50 staff including managers, clerical staff, production operators and laboratory staff. It is not known how many will relocate to Skipton when the company moves from Knaresborough.
