Villagers in Marton-le-Moor have helped raise funds for the Royal British Legion at a Poppy Party marking a milestone anniversary for the charity.

The party was one of many taking place across the country at the weekend to celebrate the Legion’s 90th anniversary.

Supporters from all generations packed the village’s Meeting Room on Sunday and raised their glasses and joined in a national toast to the Legion at 4pm.

The Meeting Room committee, which organised the event, was delighted to welcome Capt Paul Dargavel and his family from 9 Army Air Corps at neighbouring Dishforth.

Capt Dargavel presented a plaque from the corps to Meeting Room chairman Mal Brass who said that the village will be very proud to display it in the building.

Capt Dargavel also judged entries for a 1920s display competition, declaring Roy and Sonia Vinden with their assortment of coins and stamps as winners.

Runner-up was Sylvia Foxton with her details of a local family wedding in the 1920s.

During the afternoon children at the party made an impressive poppy collage which will join the photographs and art work on the Meeting Room’s walls.
