Hambleton and Richmondshire District Councils marked the beginning of celebrations for national Armed Forces Day by raising special flags last week.
Officials from the authorities took part in ceremonies to simultaneously ‘fly the flag’ across the UK.
They were joined by veterans, local cadets, civic dignitaries and forces personnel to see the Armed Forces Day flag raised at the Civic Centre in Northallerton and in Friary Gardens in Richmond.
Padre Wg Cmdr Rev Jan Taylor addressed the Hambleton gathering and Padre Brian Walton spoke at Richmond.
Hambleton guests were treated to a flypast by a Hawk from 100 Squadron while a bugler played at Richmondshire.
“Our Armed Forces and veterans rightly deserve the nation’s support and recognition,” said Coun Bridget Fortune, chairman of Hambleton District Council.
And Richmondshire District Council chairman Coun Clive World added: “It is important that our Armed Forces are shown support and gratitude for the huge personal sacrifices they make for our country.
“It was a great honour to raise the flag and with members of the 4th Mechanized Brigade from Catterick Garrison due to deploy later this year, our thoughts and best wishes are with them and their families – and we look forward to their safe return.”
