Coun Helen Flynn (Nidd) of the Harrogate Borough Council Lib Dem Group has spoken out in support of the Harrogate Advertiser series campaign to tackle elderly loneliness and isolation.

She said she is focused on providing a transport service for isolated members of the Nidderdale community since the demise of the Little Red Bus Company.

“Arguably the main contributory factor to social isolation is access to regular and reliable transport. This can apply equally if you live in a remote rural area or in the middle of a large housing estate,” she said.

“If you are without a car and do not have a regular bus service you simply cannot access local services, such as doctors’ surgeries, hospitals, post offices and local shopping.

“This is why we were particularly concerned when the Conservatives at County Hall voted to cut over £2m from subsidised bus services in February this year.”

On a recent visit to Disability Action Yorkshire, Coun Flynn found that many people who rely on wheelchairs for mobility were concerned at these cuts, which would affect access to local services.
