Talented youngsters from Knaresborough, Boroughbridge, Pateley Bridge, Nidderdale and surrounding villages are being invited to take part in Rotary Club’s annual Young Musician’s competition which will be held on Saturday November 14 at Boroughbridge High School.

Now in its 11th year this will be the first time it has been held in Boroughbridge having previously been based at King James’s School in Knaresborough.

Organiser Mike Wilkins said: “We usually get lots of entries from Boroughbridge and we thought it only fair to hold the event there for a change.”

The competition is intended to encourage the musical skills and talents of young people up to the age of 18 years who have regular music tuition in the area.

Entrants will have four separate age groups to compete in: up to school year 6, school years 7 and 9, school years 10 and 11, school years 12 and 13 who perform in one of the following categories: brass, piano/keyboard, percussion, strings/guitar, voice, woodwind. There is also an opportunity for Groups (2–4 players plus accompanist if required) .

Mike added: “Gold, Silver and Bronze certificates are awarded to all those taking part with the top two in each section receiving a cash prize.

“The winners of each category play again in the Grand Final when a Rotary Young Musician of the Year is selected from each of the three age groups.”

Competitors may enter more than one category but not more than three categories.

For individual entrants The Young Musicians of the Year each receive a cup, to be held for one year, and an additional cash prize.

“Winners may also be put forward to the Rotary District Final from where it is possible to progress to the national final,” added Mike.

“Last year cellist Ben Messenger from Boroughbridge reached the national final.

“The day concludes with an evening concert open to the public, at which the winners perform together with choirs and orchestras from local schools.”
