TEN ‘rookie’ lifesavers from the Hambleton district have made their debut in a regional competition.
The group – from Bedale Leisure Centre – took part in the Blyth Short Course Lifesaving Competition held at the Northumberland town’s leisure centre.
Competitive Lifesaving – or ‘Lifesaving Sport’, as it is more commonly known – involves the development of speed and stamina skills in events which mirror real-life situations.
Events included obstacle relays in which competitors had to dive under a barrier which simulated rescuing a submerged casualty; a manikin carry which simulates towing a casualty; and relays to test response, accuracy and speed.
The Bedale group did not return empty-handed as its relay team – made up of Rosie Hawkswell, Ben Webster and Jessica Parlour – brought home silver medals for their achievements in the obstacle relay.
• Bedale’s Rookie Lifeguard group meets at the leisure centre every Wednesday evening. For more information contact the centre on 01677 427272.
