A man escaped from a first floor window after a dog alerted him to a house fire on Newby Crescent in Harrogate.

Lee Wallace was woken up by Max the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, when he realised the house was on fire.

The 24-year-old then rescued the dog and jumped to safety from a first floor window.

Property owner, Richard Jones said: “If the dog hadn’t woke Lee up he might not have woken up at all.”

“It’s thanks to Lee, my lodger, that the dog is okay, he jumped out the window with the dog.”

Mr Wallace is currently at Pinderfield’s Hospital receiving treatment for burns to his hand.

Two fire engines from Harrogate put out the fire which is believed to have started in the downstairs hallway of the end-of-terrace house.

Mr Jones has said the house is currently uninhabitable.

The investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
