Charity book scheme

STAFF at a Northallerton opticians have raised hundreds of pounds for Diabetes UK thanks to a charity book exchange scheme.

Throughout June and July, staff at Specsavers in Northallerton have been bringing their old and unwanted books into store for customers to re-use in return for a donation to the charity.

The initiative has been a resounding success, raising more than £500 for the charity in just a few weeks.

Diabetes UK is a cause very close to the hearts of staff at the store following the death of a staff member from the condition.

Samantha Sinclair, who worked at Specsavers in Northallerton as a Saturday girl, died suddenly in November 2009, aged 19, after suffering a pulmonary embolism as a result of untreated diabetes.

Store director Ruth Bargate said: “We want to thank everyone who has supported our fundraising efforts and helped us to reach this fantastic total.”
