A youngster who lives near Ripon has completed a gruelling 70-mile bike ride to raise money for his school’s Malawi Cure Hospital project.

Malachy Wicks, nine, set out on the adventure with his father, Robert, after decided he wanted to do something he loved to raise money.

Despite 6,700ft of climbing involved in the hilly route, Malachy powered through and finished his challenge in an impressive 7h 05m.

Malachy said: “I really enjoyed myself on the bike ride and, even though I felt quite ill half-way through, I wasn’t as tired as I thought I would be at the end of it all.

“My teachers have told me that they’re impressed with what I’ve done, especially Mr Langley who is heavily involved with the Malawi project.

“I’m really pleased everyone is so thankful but I’m not too sure I like all the attention. I did it because I wanted to do something to help and I really love cycling.”

The £200 that Malachy has raised so far will be sent to a hospital in Malawi and used to purchase toys for the children and IT equipment for their doctors.

The ride with his father took them past Brimham Rocks and Menwith Hill through to Otley and then over the moor to Harden, near Bingley, before turning back towards Grewelthorpe.

Dad Robert said: “He did really well and I’m so proud of him. He decided that he would do some fund raising for Malawi off his own back so I suggested that he do a cycle ride and he was very excited about the idea”
