A YOUNG athlete is scaling new heights in one of the toughest sports in the world.
Northallerton College student Mark Scott has been representing his country in the gruelling World Mountain Running Championships.
Staged in Albania, the 17-year-old was the first Briton home, coming a creditable 17 in the U20s category in a 65-strong international field.
Running in temperatures in excess of 35C, the Northallerton youngster took just over 40 minutes to complete the 9km route, complete with 500m climb.
“It was so hard because of the heat and I collapsed at the end,” he said. “I was pleased with my time and my coach thought I had done well.”
Mark has also seen considerable success in his fell running this year. Last month he represented his country in a home international in Wales taking gold in the individual contest and helping the team take top honours with the first three places in the under 18s.
