A murder investigation in underway in Harrogate after a man was found stabbed in a car in a quite Nidderdale village.

A major incident team has closed the roads near scenic Bedlam in Nidderdale after the stabbing at 9.30pm last night (Sunday).

Police say this was an isolated incident and a man has been arrested after handing himself in to police in Greater Manchester in the early hours of this morning.

There is no danger to the wider public, a spokesman has said.

White tents have been set up at the scene for crime scene investigators, while police tape closes Whipley Bank on the B6165.

Neighbours say they have just been told that police are investigating a major incident.

“We thought it was a car accident,” said one neighbour. “It all started just after 9pm last night, with feds everywhere.

“There’s a car under the tent, parked half on the road and half on the pavement, a black Peugeot I think. But the police haven’t told us anything.”

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said in a statement that a 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 44-year-old man was stabbed at Ripley.

“Ambulance and police teams, called to Whipley Bank, discovered a man with fatal injuries in a car,” he said.

“A police investigation was immediately launched and the suspect was arrested after handing himself in to Greater Manchester Police at 2.40am on Monday.

“Police would like to reassure local residents that it was an isolated incident and there was no danger posed to the wider public.

“While enquiries remain ongoing at the address on Whipley Bank at Ripley, the B6165 remains closed to traffic. Motorists are urged to follow local diversions until further notice.”
