ARMED robbers threatened staff with a sledge-hammer as they raided a jewellery store in central Harrogate this morning.

Two men, dressed in black and wearing masks or balaclavas, forced their way into Fattorini’s jewellery store in Parliament street just after 10.30, using a sledgehammer to force the door off its hinges.

They threatened staff with the hammer, grabbing expensive jewellery before leaving the scene in a getaway car, driven by a third man.

Eye witnesses report hearing a “loud bang” as the door was smashed, before the masked men sped past.

The getaway car, a silver Vauxhall Astra, has since been found abandoned on Valley Road, off Cold Bath Road.

Police are now looking for eye-witnesses who may have seen the car as it sped to Cold Bath Road. CCTV footage shows the Astra drive off Parliament Street, Parliament Terrace, Montpellier Hill, before entering Valley Drive.

During its escape along Parliament Street, the vehicle cut across the paths of several other cars and police are appealing for the drivers of these cars to come forward.

DI Maria Taylor of Harrogate CID, said: “It is important that anyone who saw the silver Astra leave Parliament Street or arrive in Valley Drive or Valley Road contacts us, as they may have vital information which could help the investigation. Especially anyone who saw the occupants leave the car in Valley Road.”

Witnesses to the robbery are asked to contact North Yorkshire Police if they have not yet already done so.

Anyone else with any information is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2 and ask for Harrogate CID.
