Police have branded arsonists who have been repeatedly starting fires in Wetherby as ‘mindless vandals’ after the third attack this month.

Police say the spate of attacks dates back to the beginning of April, with the most high profile being the large blaze on April 30 which caused at least £6000 worth of damage.

Yesterday (Thursday, June 25) arsonists set fire to a fence on Deerstone Ridge next to the ginnel and to fences next to houses on Hudson Way (next to the old A1) damaging resident’s gardens.

This comes just one week after a near identical fire in the ginnel at the rear of Burrell Close.

Wetherby Beat Manager, PC Steve Atkinson said: “The number of fires being started are a cause for concern. This has gone beyond kids messing about and those responsible can be assured, along with the residents of Wetherby, that these matters will be thoroughly investigated with a view to bring to justice those who inflict such mindless vandalism.”

The problem may be bigger than police first thought. PC Atkinson said: “The local fire crew inform us that they have attended several other fires where there is no complainant for damage caused therefore no crime recorded.”
