Craft coopers to show off rare skills

The country’s only apprentice brewery craft cooper will be making his public debut this month at one of the country’s most important agricultural shows.

Euan Findlay, 19, who is indentured to T&R Theakston Ltd, is joining his mentor, brewery craft cooper Jonathan Manby, on the firm’s stand at the Great Yorkshire Show (July 12-14).

On the first two days the pair, who are based at Theakston’s Masham headquarters, will demonstrate the art of coopering - making casks from oak staves and iron hoops.

And Jonathan, who undertook the same journey with Theakston’s 19 years ago, will appear on the Welcome to Yorkshire stand, where a host of traditional crafts will be on display.

T&R Theakston Ltd Executive Director Simon Theakston said: “We are extremely proud to have not one, but two coopers, working as part of the Theakston’s team, and both will be with us at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show.

“Both Jonathan and Euan are very rare species in today’s world. Whilst Jonathan is the country’s only craft brewery cooper, Euan is the country’s only apprentice craft brewery cooper.

“The increasing popularity for real ale – and the demand for these beers to be served from traditional casks – means Jonathan and Euan are being kept incredibly busy.”

Euan said: “I’m very much looking forward to joining Jonathan on the Theakston stand. I have been to the show in the past as a visitor, and this will be the first time that I will be working at it.”

The Theakston Tent at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show is located on Stand 173 on 5th Avenue.
