Curzon Cinemas, which is set to open Ripon’s new cinema on North Street in the autumn, is busy recruiting staff for the venue.

The group is currently trying to recruit a deputy manager as well as general staff positions to carry out duties such as ushering, kiosk, bar and box office work.

The cinema, based at the former Abbott’s furniture store, will be the seventh UK cinema opened by the Curzon group.

A spokesman for the company said a firm date for the opening has yet to be confirmed.

Ripon has been without a cinema since 1982 when The Palladium closed its doors on Kirkgate before being converted to a nightclub.

The new cinema on North Street will incorporate a restaurant and coffee shop, as well as a downstairs cellar bar area with regular events programmed throughout the week.

Speaking to the Gazette last month, the company spokesman said: “The new cinema will create employment in the Ripon area and aims to be a cultural hub beyond simply showing films.

“The venue will host live events, music and performances, private hire opportunities and will also use its cinema screens to programme special live satellite broadcast events such as the Met Opera and the National Theatre Live.”

Sterne Properties, the developer responsible for the creation of the cinema/bar/restaurant complex, announced in April thatCurzon Cinemas would be running the venue.

The project had faced delays in 2012 when the original contractors appointed by Sterne Properties to work on the construction of the venue went bankrupt in November.
