As Wimbledon draws to its heady climax on Sunday, a Harrogate tennis coach says his business is perfectly placed to take advantage of the growing grassroots demand for classes.
Former tennis professional Matt McTurk set up Tennis Tots five years ago and it now operates at venues across the region, including Harrogate and Ripon.
Last year, he franchised the business, with operations in York and north Leeds, and is now looking for more franchisees to grow the business.
“It’s an exciting time for Tennis Tots to see the programme taking off as it has,” he said.
Tennis Tots classes run for 45 minutes and are for two age-groups: 2-4 and 4-6. Parents take an active role, effectively playing assistant coach.
“It’s a unique programme, but it’s the business model that makes it work as a scalable business,” said Matt.
“It’s a good model because it empowers the franchisee. They get rewarded for what they put into it.”
But, he said, for him it’s not about the money.
“That would be great, but really this is about inspiring as many kids as I can to get into the game,” he said.
“I want to make a difference to British tennis.”
