A CITY pub is fighting to be named Yorkshire’s Favourite Pub.

The One-Eyed Rat on Allhallowgate has made it into the final of a competition run by tourist agency Welcome to Yorkshire, and needs your votes to win.

The pub fought off competition from 200 other pubs across the county to get onto a shortlist of only 12.

First pub-goers nominated their local online, before the 30 pubs with the most votes were assessed by a panel of judges, who whittled the shortlist down to only 12 based on the customers’ comments about their favourite pub.

Landlord David Hamby, who runs the traditional pub with his wife Ruth, said:

“We’re very excited about getting this far in the competition, more for the customers who nominated us than for ourselves.”

He puts their success so far down to their unique appeal.

“We try to something different from the norm by rotating the ales so there’s always something new when people come in. We have a bit of a niche, and we’re definitely the only place like us in Ripon.”

Now the public have the chance to vote again for which of the top 12 they think is the county’s best-loved pub, and David and wife Ruth are hoping their customers’ support will get them over the finish line.

“Looking at the finalists I think our biggest competition will be the Durham Ox in Crayke. Not long ago they won a competition to be Yorkshire’s most traditional pub and we came second, so it would be nice to win one.”

The winner will be announced at the Great Yorkshire Show on Tuesday, July 12 and will be crowned “Yorkshire’s Favourite Pub”.

The competition has been launched to highlight the quality of pubs in Yorkshire and the top 30 will all feature in a new Ale Trail leaflet being produced by Welcome to Yorkshire for visitors.

Voting will take place from June 14 to July 6 at
