MEMBERS of Ripon City Band have been celebrating after beating eight other brass bands in a regional competition.
The band took part in the Northern Area Regional Championships in Darlington on Saturday, March 17, where they claimed the title of ‘Northern Area 3rd Section Regional Champions of 2012’.
The band’s percussion section also won the `best percussionists’ award and musical director Malcolm Dibb took the award for the winning conductor.
According to adjudicator Mike Kilroy, the band put on “an outstanding performance” and praised the work of the soloists.
“Overall a very good performance, indeed top drawer in every respect,” he added.
The band of 25 brass musicians plus percussionists and musical director had spent three months working hard in rehearsals for the event.
The set piece they performed at the competition was `Olympus’, named for this Olympic year, and was a new piece of music specially composed for the occasion by Philip Harper.
The band came second in the competition last year and with this year’s win comes an invitation to compete at the National Brass Band Championships held in Cheltenham in September where the band will compete against the top 3rd section bands from England, Scotland and Wales.
The win also ensures that the band will be promoted into the 2nd section for 2013, a target Mr Dibb has been aiming for in the past few years.
A busy April is in store for the band which includes two engagements: one on Good Friday, April 6, at Fountains Abbey, and one on April 28 at the Harrogate Flower Show.
