The author of the Young Herriot books John Lewis-Stempel, paid a visit to Thirsk to meet fans of James Herriot.

He signed copies of his book Young Herriot, which accompanies the BBC TV series which went out before Christmas.

The three part series explored the life of a young James Herriot, played by Iain de Caestecker.

Young Herriot tells the story of James’ formative years at veterinary college.

The series was set in Glasgow in the 1930s and along with the book shines a light on his calling to work with animals, his early friendships and his quest for knowledge.

The Young Herriot uses previously unpublished diaries and casebooks from Alf Wight’s days as a student.
