IT might be more than 50 miles from the coast but once again landlocked Ripon is set to become a seaside resort for the day.
The second annual Ripon by the Sea event takes place in the city’s Spa Park tomorrow – Saturday, September 3 – from 11am to 4.30pm and marks the start of the 14th Ripon International Festival.
Festival chairman Coun Bernard Bateman said: “It promises to be a great festive event, as was our first Ripon by the Sea.
“The sincere thanks of myself and Ripon Festivals goes out to Don Grundy of The Deli on Duck Hill who has once again masterminded the event.”
Among the attractions will be a sand castle building competition on Ripon’s very own beach, a fairground featuring a range of amusements, donkey rides, face painting from noon-2.30pm, and music by Ripon City Band from 1-3pm.
There will also be entertainment with Punch and Judy shows at 11.30am and 1.30pm, the Pirate Puppeteers show set in a pirate ship at 12.30pm and 3pm, and breath-taking excitement when members of the National Festival Circus perform under a big top.
The circus will hold performances at 1pm, 2.30pm and 4.30pm and tickets in advance costing adults £3, children £1, are available from Knowledge Magnet on Kirkgate, the Tourist Information Centre on Minster Road, and Hays Travel on Westgate. Admission on the day costs adults £4, children £2.
Other activities taking place in the Spa Park include charity stalls featuring crafts, a wheel of fortune, tombola and more, plus refreshments including ice cream, popcorn, candyfloss, and Ripon rock.
