The village of Minskip will be covered in red, white and blue bunting to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Villagers are busy creating a mile’s worth of bunting to decorate the entire length of their main street for Jubilee weekend, from June 2 - 4.

The Minskip Village Hall Committee and Minskip Church Council have combined to organise a weekend to remember and many villagers have also given their time and provided materials for the bunting.

Lynn Owen, chairman of the Village Hall Committee, said: “When we first thought of the idea to cover the entire length of the village in bunting, we knew it would be quite a challenge.

“But the response of residents has been amazing and we have already had two ‘bunting and banter’ sewing meetings which have been very productive.

“The main street will look splendid in a wonderful blaze of colour. We are also encouraging villagers to choose red, white and blue planting schemes in their gardens or in pots and containers outside their homes to complement the bunting.”

Other events taking place in Minskip over Jubilee weekend include a church service on Sunday, June 3, at 10am with a flower festival inside featuring a competition for adults and children on the Jubilee theme.

There will also be an exhibition of photos and maps in Minskip Village Hall, looking at the history of the village, together with cream teas and children’s competitions on Sunday afternoon.

The exhibition is being organised by Pauline Barker of Minskip Farm Shop and she would like to hear from anyone who has any old Minskip memorabilia.

Pauline can be contacted at the shop on Boroughbridge Road or by telephoning her on 01423 323532.

l During the Jubilee weekend, the church and village hall will be open to all on Sunday, from 2 - 5pm, and Monday, from 10am - noon.
