Ripon got into the festive spirit at the weekend for the city’s big Christmas lights switch-on.

A programme of entertainment including music and dance acts plus children’s rides entertained the crowds on the market square in the afternoon culminating in the turning-on of the lights at 6pm on Saturday, November 22.

Switching-on the lights along with Santa Claus and Mrs Claus was eight-year-old Florence Maylor, who earned the honour after winning the Ripon 2014 Children’s Art Competition.

The city is enjoying new lights on Kirkgate, Westgate, Fishergate and Old Market Place after an anonymous eleventh hour donation of £3,100 helped Discover Ripon reach its £3,611 fund raising target to pay for the new ones.

It follows last year’s successful fund raising campaign when the people and businesses of Ripon along with Ripon City Council helped raise £9,581 for new lights on Market Place.
