YEAR 10 students at Tadcaster Grammar School took part in a Prison! Me! No Way! day last week.
Now in its second year, the national event aims to halt the escalating rates of juvenile crime, both locally and nationally by forging new partnerships between schools and agencies.

Students and staff took part in ten different workshops, viewed a full size prison cell and experienced a typical street scene complete with prison dogs.

They looked at social issues, from a perspective other than their own, and explored how actions and consequences effect us all as members of a community.

In order to make the day as effective and realistic as possible, the Year 10 students were isolated for the day to experience being treated like prisoners.

They participated in prison meal routines and were escorted by prison staff.

Helen Cooper, head of citizenship and PHSE at the School said: “Tadcaster Grammar School is very grateful to the different agencies who came together to make the day a success.

“Particular thanks must go to the Prison! Me! No Way team, the Prison Service, the Prison Service Dog Team, O2 Nuisance Call Bureau, North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service and British Transport Police.

Doug Evans, national co-ordinator of the Prison! Me! No-Way! Trust said: “The work of the Trust, a registered charity, aims to dissuade young people from becoming involved in crime, by raising awareness of the penalties and consequences associated with it.

“If this type of day diverts just one or two young people from offending, then it has literally saved lives from being damaged and wasted, lives which can go on to succeed,” he said.
