It’s ladies night at Wetherby racecourse on Thursday evening when the ‘A1 Course’ stage their final fixture of the 2012-2013 season.
The annual Yorkshire Post Ladies Evening combines glamour and racing when racegoers can sip champagne, and hopefully even back a winner or two.
The seven-race programme starts at 5:55pmRunning plans are unclear at the time of writing but if last week’s scorer, Loose Performer, runs for the in-form David O’Meara yard then he is worth a bet.
Epsom stage the 234th Derby on Saturday when the Irish raider, Dawn Approach, will start a red-hot favourite.
It’s rare that Yorkshire has a viable contender for the race but I firmly believe that the Middleham-trained Libertarian has a great chance on Saturday. He was a shock winner of the Dante at York but won going away from some decent rivals and can only get better.
Aidan O’Brien is bound to run at least one pacemaker to try to exploit any chinks in the favourite’s stamina which will be a massive help for Libertarian.
I just hope he can stay within 10 lengths of the leaders at Tattenham Corner when his stamina will kick in. Also, it could be worth taking the 20/1 on Libertarian for the St Leger now.
If he runs anything of a race on Saturday he will be a short price for a race that looks tailor made for him.
On the same card, David Barron has booked champion jockey Richard Hughes for Long Awaited in the Epsom Dash. The Thirsk-trained runner has already won over course and distance and only needs a high draw to be a major player in this hot race.
Another York winner, Liber Nauticus, is my selection for the Oaks at Epsom on Friday. She took a while to get into top gear on the Knavesmire but won with a bit in hand and is trained by Sir Michael Stoute who has his team in peak form.
Tadcaster trainer Tom Tate could also have a Derby runner on Saturday, Good Speech in the Tradesman’s Derby at Musselburgh. She has improved when stepped up in distance and Tomsays she always runs her heart out.
There is also racing in Yorkshire at Catterick on Friday and Doncaster on Saturday. Next week the action moves on to Ripon who stage a great two-day meeting on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday evening.
