THE glamorous world of polo is set to come to Harrogate, in the form of a new club.

Recently launched by Alan Williams and Richard Bradbury, the Harrogate Polo Club has been set up to attract keen equestrians to the sport, and introduce the town to a new venture.

The club is still in its very early stages, but is targeting a finished team and first competitive match in 18 months’ time.

Former Harrogate Town FC chief executive Alan Williams is excited about bringing polo to Harrogate, as Yorkshire only boasts a handful of clubs

“It’s something I’ve wanted to do for quite some time, and when I finished at the football club my wife Jean said ‘why not take it by the scruff of the neck and start the polo club?’ so we did,” he said.

“Myself and Richard felt there was definitely a gap in the market for polo in Harrogate, so we put out a few feelers and we’ve been inundated with queries.

“There’s a big equestrian scene in and around Harrogate and I think a lot of people would be keen to get involved.

“It’s still in the very early stages, we’re talking to a lot of parties about a home ground.

“We’ve had offers of land but it’ll depend on what suits both parties.

“We’re looking at having the team ready and everything operational 18 months from now.”

One aspect that has been secured is an impressive list of sponsors.

Royal wedding champagne suppliers Pol Roger are already on board, as are Hotel du Vin, The Aga Shop, ATP Advertising and Marketing, tailors Rhodes Wood, Clean Energy (Yorkshire) Ltd, restaurant William & Victoria and estate agents Feather Smailes Scales.

And Canterbury of New Zealand have already designed the home and away kit as the club begins to take shape.

“I think it’s something the town would enjoy, the interest so far has been phenomenal,” Williams continued.
