There were celebrations abound at Bardsey Bowling Club this week as Rita Hill clinched the Bilton Dragon Ladies competition, taking the region’s top lady title.

Rita got the day underway in the first round beating Low Harrogate’s Carol Hawkins 21-14.

Julie Heaton (Dacre) beat young Samantha Rowson from Black Swan 21-9.

It’s been a great season for Samantha as she has progressed to the higher divisions. If she keeps going at this pace will be sure to get her name on the cup one day.

Jenny Savage (Dacre) beat Pauline White 21-7, Starbeck’s Sue Green beat Val Rowson 21-14 and Myra Humpleby (Low Harrogate) beat fellow clubmate Margaret Brockhill 21-10.

In the quarter final round Savage progressed to the Semi after beating Heaton 21-15. Hill faced a mountain of a task against Green but it was mountain conquered as she won 21-14.

Humpleby beat Dragon’s Sarah Elsworth 21-8 and in the final game of the round defending champion Angela Spilsbury (Starbeck) beat Sarah Ravilious 21-5.

In the first semi-final game Hill continued her good form to beat Savage 21-11. Humpleby and Spilsbury battle every end in a tight match with Humpleby just finishing strongest to win 21-18.

First blood went to Humpleby in the final who made a dream start with two pairs to take a 4-0 lead.

Hill got hold of the Jack next end but promptly lost it again brining the match to 5-1. With nerves settled Hill went on short run taking a 7-5 lead which continued as the Jack changed hands several times till 14-14.

Humpleby appeared to take control with a strong final furlong sprint taking a 19-15 lead.

Grimly hanging on, Hill won a vital end saving the game and pulling herself back to within touching distance 18-19.

Humpleby clinched the next end however as the excitement grew leading 20-18 and needing just one more point to take the title.

Again with everything to play for Hill dug deep to save the game and bring it to 19-20.

Holding her nerve, Hill lead out well and ended up counting two with Humpleby having one final bowl. In a tense finish all eyes were on Humpleby who held the final win or lose bowl.

And it was a delighted Rita Hill who celebrated as the bowl failed to score giving her a fantastic and very well deserved victory.

After a great day, praise was again given to Bilton Dragon Bowling Club for hosting another well-organised competition.
