RIPON enter the lion’s den tomorrow with a tricky trip to Yorkshire Two leaders Barnsley (2.15pm ko).First team coach Al Norrie knows what to expect against their strong South Yorkshire opponents.

“It’s a really tough trip, but we’re going there full of confidence,” said Norrie.

“We’ve won three out of our last four league games. We’ll be going there underdogs, all the pressure will be on them to win. But we’re in good form, hopefully we can cause an upset.”

On Saturday Ripon were without a competitive fixture.

But a friendly against York University was arranged instead.

Playing with the wind the home side were quickly into their stride and early pressure brought a try for full back Jason Bell after only five minutes with a conversion by Scott McAra.

Despite the early superiority the York side defended well and Ripon seemed devoid of ideas as to how to break them down, and were one-dimensional in their approach.

A string of penalties conceded by the home side allowed York to mount an attack from within the Ripon 22 and some missed tackles resulted in a try out wide.

An interception near their own line gave the visitors chance to break out for another seven points and only a close range try from Adam Scott-Paul just before half time salvaged something for Ripon in a 40 minutes that should have seen them well out in front.

Ripon took the lead again with another Scott–Paul try after 15 minutes of the second half but the University side hit back with a good try after 29 minutes to take a match winning lead of 19-17.
