Holders Kirk Deighton Rangers safely made it through to the Harrogate and District Senior Cup semi-finals with a 3-1 win over Leyburn United on Saturday.

Joe Turley (2) and Olly Aspey were on target as Rangers put up a gritty showing to advance.

The two teams meet up again this Saturday in Leyburn with Rangers hoping to put pressure on leading trio Bedale Town, Rawdon Old Boys and Wetherby Athletic at the top.

Boss Dan Marshall picked out Turley for special praise when reflecting on Saturday’s cup win, after the striker took his tally to four goals in two games. However the manager said his side started slowly in the Barr Field win.

On the match, he said: “We were not at out best in the first half and we went behind. We got better as the half went on but their keeper made several excellent saves to see them leading at half time.

“Second half we played with more tempo and dominated from the start, once we equalised through Joe there was only going to be one winner. He was outstanding again and now has four goals in two games.”

The draw has yet to be made for the competition’s last four and one of Clifford, Rawdon Old Boys or Kirkby Malzeard lie await for Marshall’s men.

Clifford put on the performances of the round to hammer rivals Wetherby Athletic A 6-1 at home.

Gerard McCargo smashed home a hat-trick and Tom Deighton added a brace.

Rawdon knocked out 2012/13 league winners Beckwithshaw Saints 2-0, while Malzeard hammered league leaders Bedale Town 7-4. Phil Briscombe (2), Ryan Blanchard, Stuart Clark and Reece Windle (2) all scored for Kirkby.
