YOUNG mums have been boxing clever to help people in Romania.

A group of new and expectant mothers recently signed up as Millennium Volunteers (MVs) and has been collecting an array of goodies to bring Christmas cheer to one of the poorest places in the world.

All manner of items suitable for boys and girls up to 18 years of age have been gathered in and packed into 20 gift-wrapped shoeboxes by eight Northallerton MVs.
The young mums have donated them to the town's New Life Baptist Church which every year runs a Shoebox for Romania Appeal.

They will be among a consignment of 2,200 boxes due to be sent to Aivd and Simenia in Transylvania.

"It is amazing that in the 21st century there are still people in the world who have absolutely nothing," says volunteer Kirsty Smith. "So we were only too pleased to try and help."

MV support worker Donna Westbrook said the new mums' group, which meets at the New Life Baptist Church, had done a fantastic job and had spent their own money on the appeal.

The young mums group meets every Monday from 10.30am to 1pm.

For more information, call in or contact Donna Westbrook on 0797 419 5584. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact MV co-ordinator Dawn Carter on 01609 780458.
