Campaigners in Masham have taken matters into their own hands and built their own tourist sign with a cash boost from local businesses.
Campaigners designed and erected their own sign this morning (Friday, May 10), with the help of local artist Rob Blades, after the Highways Agency quoted a £36,000 price tag for a new tourist sign following the multi-million pound revamp of the A1.
A coalition of Masham businesses – breweries Black Sheep and Theakstons, feedmills I’Ansons and Jamesons, the Old Station Caravan Park and luxury hotel Swinton Park – contributed money towards the new sign which, at £3,000, is just one twelfth of the cost suggested by the agency.
Since the signs were removed, businesses in Masham reported up to a 30 per cent decline in visitor numbers and Old Station Café – owned by campaigner Flo Grainger – has to reduce its opening hours.
Susan Briggs, of Dales Tourism, told the Gazette: “It was a Yes Minister style cock-up and it was stroppy women who came to the rescue.”
